The ThermaCat™ Active Level III+ Diesel Particulate Filter system is a combined technology consisting of a regeneration component of external fuel injection, and a passive component of a catalytically coated filter substrate. The Level 3+ CARB approved diesel engine retrofit device uses exothermic (flameless) technology and is specifically designed to perform with an automatic electronically controlled filter regeneration. Regenerations take place in real-time engine operation without affecting an engine’s overall performance. This offers the benefits of no driver/operator interface, no vehicle or equipment downtime, and no daily maintenance intervals.
The superior filtration efficiency of the ThermaCat™ DPF system provides greater than 95% reduction of diesel PM (particulate matter), greater than 90% reduction of HC (hydrocarbons) and CO (carbon monoxide), and also meets 2009 standards for NO2 (nitrogen dioxide). The system is intended to operate on vehicles with severe duty cycles, where low exhaust gas temperatures are predominant and traditional passive DPF systems would not be suitable. As long as the vehicle is operated at a sufficient load with exhaust gas temperatures above 500°F, the particulate filter will regenerate itself by means of the catalytic filter. In conditions where the vehicle runs for longer periods of time without higher loads and the exhaust gas temperatures are below 500°F, then the filter will accumulate soot particles and the system backpressure will increase. Once the exhaust gas backpressure reaches a preset value the system automatically activates the diesel post-injection. The fuel injected into the exhaust stream is converted into heat which increases the diesel filter inlet temperature sufficiently to cause a burn off (regeneration) of diesel PM. The ThermaCat™ filter regeneration is electronically controlled and occurs automatically during normal vehicle operation, transparent to the operator.
Cost effectiveness is improved because regeneration occurs during normal operations with no impact on drivability or performance. The compact design of the system with few components allows easy vehicle fit and installation, and custom installation kits are available for almost all vehicles.
