Aerodynamic Trailer Systems, LLC has developed fuel efficient products for semi-tractor trailers to reduce drag and improve fuel economy. They offer the SmartTail™ and the WindTamer™ - both products have been fully tested per the SmartWay and SAE J1321 standards, and the tests demonstrated there is a combined fuel efficiency improvement of 5.3% at speeds of 63mph when both are used.
The SmartTail™ improves the aerodynamic profile of a vehicle with polymer skins that are mounted directly to the rear doors. The polymer skin automatically inflates to optimize the trailer’s rear profile to aerodynamically reduce air vortex disturbances at the rear of the trailer. It inflates automatically when the vehicle reaches a programmed speed, so the driver is not required to deploy the system. The control system deflates the polymer skin automatically at very low speeds so that they are totally deflated when the driver is required to open the rear doors. It also includes an immediate deflation feature if the trailer is moving in reverse. The SmartTail™ incorporates a dedicated micro-controller that constantly monitors speed, altitude and direction via an internal GPS. The controller also monitors temperature and pressure within the polymer skins to control actuation. The ADS (Air Distribution System) is totally self-contained including the air blower system, valves and electronics. The entire system weighs less than 125 lbs. and has a 10 year life expectancy.
The WindTamer™ improves the aerodynamic profile of a semi-tractor trailer with a contoured cover for the undercarriage. Rugged polyethylene construction deflects the air to reduce drag and improve fuel efficiency. The compact design allows full access to trailer undercarriage including full clearance in TOFC applications that require lifting engagement to trailer side and undercarriage areas. The unique mid-trailer mounting location deflects wind and protects the undercarriage. It also adds a front shield to brake lines and provides a full 20” of ground clearance. No holes are required to be drilled for mounting and no maintenance is required for optimal performance.
