The Aero-Tail is an inflatable aerodynamic device from AeroVolution designed to hold its shape without an internal frame. The patented "dual-walled" design has 4 panels (2 per side) which create a 2.5" thick inflated shell for this shape, greatly minimizing the air supply pressure requirements. It is made of woven, recycled polypropylene with a silicone coating. The chambers are inflated with either a remote air supply or from the trucks on-board air system; with a working pressure of 8 psi each chamber inflates in about 30 seconds. Once inflated over closed doors, the Aero-Tail holds itself in place, streamlining the turbulent air for a clean exit at the back of the trailer.
The aerodynamic performance reduces drag and improves fuel economy, and the device is a SmartWay verified technology. SAE Type II Fuel Economy Tests were conducted with the Aero-Tail, and Class 8 truck fuel economy was shown to improve by 3.5% at average highway speeds of 58mph. The fuel efficiency numbers can improve with long-haul applications where open roads allow higher average speeds.
The Aero-Tail splits in half, opening and folding with the doors to side of the trailer. Access to cargo at loading docks is a simple deflation of inner chambers allowing the panels to fold and compress with the doors as they swing to the side of the trailer. It deflates quickly to a near-flat shape and lies against the trailer's doors, which can then be opened and secured.
